Is Holiday Cover a Must for a Trip Abroad?

Travelling abroad is always an exciting time - the sun, the sea, the views and the pleasure of having time to enjoy yourself. But could the destination we choose be holding us back if we don't have any holiday cover?
The world is a much smaller place now, given the ease in which we can access the Internet and fully research a place before we visit it. Equally, airlines provide routes all over the world so that even the most far flung places are just a few hours from your doorstep.
With greater knowledge and awareness, we can map out what we want to do in a new location, even if it is off the beaten track or still emerging on the travellers' radar. Whether it's going to attractions, lying on the beach or simply soaking up the atmosphere, it's great to know about where we are going before we get there.
But with this greater education of our locale, we may be tempted to look into activities that could make it even more memorable. For example, scuba diving in the Maldives, skiing on Alpine slopes, rafting in Austria, or even kayaking and jet skiing in New Zealand.
However, if you are tempted to tackle these 'risky' activities on location, the question that needs to be asked is whether your holiday cover will extend to these pursuits and cover you comprehensively for the adventures ahead.
Any good insurer will be able to tell you what activities are excluded from the holiday cover and build in any that you may want to pursue. You may well have to buy an extended policy for peace of mind. For example, if it's winter sports you are gearing up for, an insurance provider will be able to offer a specialist package tailor made for you.
Bear in mind that the higher the risk, the higher the premium you may have to pay. But equally, holiday cover can work in your favour if you happen to be in an accident and a claim is made against you. Check with your insurance provider how much your personal liability is.
Even with specialist policies, double check whether you are covered for medical expenses, as adventurous pursuits could well lead to a spell in hospital if you come off worst and require urgent medical treatment.
Taking the necessary precautions before you reach your resort could well put you in good stead and give you more confidence to enjoy the pursuits and activities that you want to do. Such policies will remove any doubt from your mind. Equally, the burden of undertaking these pursuits safely will fall on you acting in a responsible manner, otherwise the policy could be compromised and a claim may well be rejected if, for example, you are under the influence of drugs or drink.
With all holiday cover, read the small print and if you are in doubt, always ask. The price of your indulgence could cost you a small fortune if you aren't covered properly.
