Are You Prepared for an Emergency?

* The importance of preparing for a disaster
* What role does everybody play in readiness and follow through
* How to respond to emergency situations including emergency evacuations
1) The importance of preparing for a disaster...
Although we can consider ourselves lucky because we have never had a serious emergency. Disasters strike without warning many times a day throughout the United States. Be it an emergency caused by natural events or workplace hazards, lives, property and the Club are at risk during a typical emergency situation.
Natural disasters occur when they are least expected. In Florida you can see a hurricane develop and due to that, you can act accordingly. In this part of the country, there are no earthquake warnings.
Workplace disasters are like earthquakes. You only have time to react to the situation occurring at that precise moment and the only way of reducing your exposure to injury and loss is to be prepared in the best possible way.
Careful planning is the key to Disaster Preparedness. The foundation for the Club's response to a disaster is the Emergency Action Plan. The plan needs to detail actions we must take to ensure your safety and those on the club premises in an emergency situation.
2) What role does everybody play in readiness and follow through...
Untrained and unplanned responses to an emergency can result in injury, property loss, or death. It is all of our duties to understand the plan and then put it into action.
We all must be familiar with the procedures for an emergency and must be able to act calmly and swiftly in reducing the chance of a problem. We must take responsibility for others on the VCC site that weren't involved in the preparing for a disaster. Our actions will dictate how smoothly the Club reacts to the situation at hand.
It is imperative that we all take these issues seriously because at the time of a disaster we never know how we will react and a trained individual has a much better chance of taking the correct actions and reducing the risk at that moment.
3) How to respond to emergency situations including emergency evacuations...
There are two types of disasters that we will concentrate on from a preparedness basis... an earthquake and a fire. The key for concentrating on these two types of disasters is that they involve evacuation of personnel, which carries with it a tremendous amount of risk and responsibility.
Evacuation - To be sure the emergency action plan will work when a disaster strikes is an element of Emergency Preparedness that has to have a plan in effect that addresses the roles of individuals to be involved and routes to alleviate problems at the time the emergency hits. The plan, the personnel, and the route should be prepared by all those involved and then practiced so that all are trained appropriately. The evacuating of individuals both employees and member/guests is key to reducing injury and property damage.
The evacuation plan must have a route and an assembly area and specific individuals that take on roles to make sure the plan is followed.
Some of the individuals role that should be reviewed are as follows:
•Emergency Coordinator
•Group Leader
•Guide
•Searcher
